The UPEI Panthers' playoff chances took a critical hit Saturday afternoon as a lone first-half goal by the Dalhousie Tigers dealt them a 1-0 defeat.
The game's only goal came just before halftime when Dalhousie's Elise Evans sent a perfect cross to Taylor Heard, who tapped it past goalkeeper Claudia Mazzei in the 45th minute.
Mazzei was a standout for the Panthers (1-6-2), making seven saves to keep her team in the game. Despite her efforts, the UPEI offence struggled to generate chances, managing just one shot on target. Dalhousie (4-3-2) goalkeeper Brianne MacDonald earned a relatively easy clean sheet after being credited with just one save.
With the loss, the Panthers now find themselves in a must-win situation for their remaining three regular season games to secure a playoff spot. Their next challenge comes Sunday when they travel to Halifax to face the Saint Mary's Huskies. Meanwhile, the Tigers head to Sackville to take on the Mount Allison Mounties.
