Lacrosse
The University of Prince Edward Island Field Lacrosse Team is entering its second season in the Maritime University Field Lacrosse League (MUFLL) in the Fall of 2021. The season runs from September to November, with Championship weekend occurring during the long weekend of November.
HOW TO JOIN
All skill-levels are encouraged to join. We are proud to have had several players learn to play our national sport of lacrosse here at UPEI. We are a co-ed team that accepts students from both UPEI and Holland College. A training camp will be taking place at the end of August. There are 8 regular season games. Practice schedule is TBD, but practices typically occur twice weekly. Please contact coach Karl Mitchell at kpmitchell@upei.ca (902-318-1844) if you are interested in participating in any capacity.
TEAM HISTORY
The MUFLL was founded in 2005 and is currently made up of teams from six universities including Dalhousie, Saint Mary's, St. Francis Xavier, Mount Allison, and the University of New Brunswick. UPEI officially joined the MUFLL in 2019 following a successful pilot season in 2018. In 2019 UPEI Lacrosse was also officially ratified by the UPEISU as a club sport.
In our first and only season, UPEI won its inaugural home opener against UNB, and carried that momentum on to defeat Mount Allison the next day. UPEI eventually fell to UNB in the quarter finals of Championship Weekend by a score of 8-7.
At the 2019 MUFLL awards ceremony, voting was unanimous for UPEI to receive the "Coaching Staff of the Year" award. The team is coached by Karl Mitchell and Noah Macleod. Both Karl and Noah played lacrosse together at St. FX. Noah, having won two MUFLL championships, and Karl, being former captain and coach of STFX Lacrosse, have brought tremendous experience to the team. The MUFLL also awarded coach Karl with the "Commissioner's Award for Dedication to the Sport '' in 2019, and in 2014 Karl received coaching staff of the year while on the bench for St. FX-Lacrosse.
As a club sport, the team is solely financed through membership fees, fundraisers, and donations. Expenses include league fees, travel/accomodation, equipment, jerseys/shorts, and helmets. There will be a $300 team fee for each player, and "10-for-10" raffle tickets will be sold as a team fundraiser.
The team will be sporting brand new team helmets, jerseys, and shorts for the 2021 season. The entire starting attack lineup from 2019 is returning. We also have some local talent in Alex Stokes and Ethan Malcolm returning to play for UPEI after spending several years playing off island. Our back end will be anchored by our entire starting defense from 2019, with the addition of former SMU captain and 2019 MUFLL Defencemen of the Year Alex and future MUFLL Rookie of the Year Ethan.
