The UPEI Panthers were shut out 2-0 by a disciplined Acadia Axewomen squad, whose rock-solid defence and timely goals secured a win Sunday afternoon.
Despite a valiant effort from UPEI (1-5-2) goalkeeper Claudia Mazzei, Acadia's early set-piece goal and a second-half penalty kick proved too much for the Panthers to overcome.
The scoring opened in the 19th minute when Acadia (5-2-2) capitalized on a set piece. A corner kick sailed over Mazzei and found Taylor Kay at the far post, who tapped the ball in for the first goal. Acadia's early advantage put the Panthers on the back foot, and their defensive structure made it hard for UPEI to create chances.
Acadia doubled their lead in the 62nd minute after UPEI's Ashley Bolduc was whistled for a penalty in the box, pulling on Kay's jersey. Brenna Kennedy confidently stepped up and converted the penalty, putting the Axewomen up 2-0.
Despite the two-goal deficit, Mazzei had a strong performance, making 13 saves to keep her team in the game. Unfortunately, the Panthers were unable to break through Acadia's defence.
Next up for the Panthers is their home finale, as they host the Dalhousie Tigers Saturday at 1 p.m. The Axewomen travel to Antigonish on Friday to take on the St. FX X-Women.
