MONCTON, NB—The Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues edged out the UPEI Panthers 2-1 in a hard-fought Atlantic University Sport (AUS) match Sunday afternoon, with a late penalty kick sealing their second straight win.
The decisive moment came in the 73rd minute when Zoe Brockbank coolly converted a penalty kick, securing the win for Moncton (2-1-1). Earlier, Kyla Desroches had opened the scoring in the first half, giving the Aigles Bleues a 1-0 lead in what was an evenly contested first 45 minutes, with both teams showcasing strong defensive play.
UPEI (1-2-1) fought back early in the second half, equalizing in the 55th minute when Grace McQuaid lunged for the ball from a header off a corner kick. However, despite their efforts, the Panthers couldn't find another breakthrough. Claudia Mazzei stood strong in goal for UPEI, making four saves, while Moncton's Krista Phillips stopped six shots to preserve the victory.
Both teams earned four corner kicks throughout the match, highlighting how closely matched the sides were. Moncton had previously defeated the Mount Allison Mounties on Thursday, and they will next host the Saint Mary's Huskies on Friday at 4 p.m. The Panthers, meanwhile, will return to home action on Sunday, hosting the St. FX X-Women at 1 p.m.
