MONCTON – The lone third period goal by Brittany Poitras (Katherine Dubuc, Karine Roy), with 4:26 left to play, lifted the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues (1-0) to a 5-4 win over University of Prince Edward Island Panthers (0-1) in the first quarter final series game of Atlantic University Sport women's hockey, Saturday at the J.-Louis-Lévesque Arena.
The second game of the best of 3 series goes Sunday afternoon, at 5 p.m. in Charlottetown.
The Poitras goal, on the power play, broke a 4-4 score established in the second period as both teams exchanged goals throughout the game. Moncton Subway player of the game, Katryne Villeneuve, led the offensive with a hat trick, including two power play goals. She also added an assist. Karine Roy was the other Blue and Gold scorer and she added two assists. The score was 3-3 after one period and 4-4 after two. Emma Martin and Panthers Subway player of the game, Rachel Colle, one each, and Sydnee Baker, two, replied for the visitors. Moncton had a 26-15 edge on shots on goal and only allowed three in the third period. Gabrielle Forget registered the win in nets and Marie-Soleil Deschênes, the loss.
Moncton was 3 for 8 on the power play and the Panthers, 2 for 4. Five of the 9 goals were on the power play.
