Panthers close out regular season with win over Memorial
The UPEI Panthers were able to sweep the Memorial Sea-Hawks and win 86-79 on Saturday afternoon.
ST. JOHN'S, NL—The UPEI Panthers were able to sweep the Memorial Sea-Hawks and win 86-79 on Saturday afternoon.
A 3-point play by Memorial's River Drefers opened the scoring for the Sea-Hawks, and they continued to push and go on a 9-0 run. That was ended by a layup from Elijah Miller, and the Panthers were able to come back and tie the game at 11 midway through the quarter with a 3-pointer from Daren Clarke. A three from Memorial's Nicholas Tuff put them ahead by 4, but the Panthers had a reply with a layup from Emmanuel Ndatuje. Back-and-forth play continued, and the first quarter ended 23-20 for the Sea-Hawks.
Two threes from the Panthers allowed them to take over the lead early in the second quarter, by Isiah Ankra and Elijah Miller. The Sea-Hawks were able to take back the lead midway through the quarter, thanks to a layup from Flynn Boardman-Raffet, and a follow up 3-pointer allowed them to extend their lead to 9. Back-and-forth play continued, and the Sea-Hawks were able to end the half leading 45-35.
Elijah Miller led the team with 14 points for the Panthers at the half. Both Daren Clarke and Emmanuel Ndatuje put up 7 points apiece.
On the Sea-Hawks side, Flynn Boardman-Raffet led all scorers at the half with 20 points and 5 rebounds. Nicholas Tuff put up 11 points, and River Drefers got 7 points for the team.
The third quarter opened with a 7-0 run for the Panthers, highlighted by a jump shot and layup from Elijah Miller. A 3-pointer from Memorial's Jodick Moudiandambu ended that run, and baskets were exchanged until midway through the quarter when the Panthers were able to tie the score at 54 with two good free throws from Kamari Scott. A three from Myles Fryett put the Sea-Hawks ahead, but the Panthers had a reply with a 3 from Dakelle Brooks, and a layup from Eiljah Miller gave them back the lead nearing the end of the third. A last minute 3-point play from Memorial's Boris Ristanovic brought them within 3 points of the lead heading into the final frame, with the Panthers up 68-65.
A free throw for the Panthers opened the scoring in the final quarter, but Boris Ristanovic had a reply for Memorial with a layup. Layups by Elijah Miller and Kamari Scott put the Panthers ahead by 6 points. Nearing the end of the quarter, the Sea-Hawks started to make a push with a layup from Cameron Stanford and 3-point play from Boris Ristanovic, however the Panthers were able to respond with a 3-pointer from Dakelle Brooks. Despite a determined effort from the Sea-Hawks, the Panthers were able to hold on and win the game 86-79.
The Subway Player of the game for the Panthers was Elijah Miller, who had a game-high 30 points. Dakelle Brooks put up 18 and Kamari Scott had 12 for the team.
On the Sea-Hawks side, Flynn Boardman-Raffet led the team with 20 points and 5 rebounds, while Nicholas Tuff put up a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Boris Ristanovic had a solid game with 14 points.
This concludes the regular season play for both the Sea-Hawks and the Panthers.
