Panthers add gritty two-way power forward SIMON HUGHES

Simon Hughes and Forbes MacPherson call it a perfect fit.

 

Hughes, a 21-year-old rugged forward from Stratford, P.E.I., has committed to joining the MacPherson-coached UPEI Panthers for the 2025-26 Atlantic University Sport (AUS) Men's Hockey Conference season.

 

"Obviously, growing up and watching games, I have a connection with Forbie and with it being in my hometown, (playing for the Panthers) was always in the back of my mind," Hughes told The Guardian in a phone interview July 21. "At the end of last year, I had a couple of options, but when I looked at all of them I thought UPEI would be the best option for me. A, to stay at home and B, have a coaching staff that I really trust and had a big interest in me and want me to get to the next level. It came down to the staff, if I'm being honest, and the opportunity to play at home."
