MacDonald was a football standout, playing five years for the Panthers and winning awards for each of those years. In 1975–76, he was named Rookie of the Year, followed by All-conference Defensive Back for the next three consecutive years. In 1979–80, he wound up his football career at UPEI and was recognized as the University’s Male Athlete of the Year.
