SACKVILLE, NB—The Mount Allison Mounties women's hockey team returned to the ice at the Tantramar Veterans Memorial Civic Centre for the final time this season as they welcomed the UPEI Panthers to Sackville. It was a special night for the entire Mounties team as they honoured 5 graduating seniors including Cassie Clarke, Katie Bouwman, Molly Baxendale, Tallon Stephenson, and captain Rory Aiken.
It was the visiting Panthers who struck first just over 8 minutes into the game as Avery Penner found the back of the net for UPEI to give her team the 1-0 advantage. The Mounties would not be kept off the scoresheet long however as Oceane Asham continued her great play with another goal just two and a half minutes later to even the score at 1, which would stay put into the first intermission.
One of the seniors, Tallon Stephenson added to her special night with a goal coming with just over 7 minutes left in the second period. The teams were not done trading goals however as Orianna MacNeil had a shot from the blue line find the back of the net on the power play to even the game at 2 once again, the score which would stay heading into the third period.
The third period saw opportunities for both sides to close the game, but neither squad was able to break the deadlock in regulation. 3-on-3 overtime brought end to end action for the entirety of the 5 minutes, but it was Kierra St. Peter that spoiled the Mounties senior night and secured victory for her Panthers with just 4 seconds remaining before the shootout.
UPEI (7-15-0-3) return to play on Friday, February 2nd in Moncton as they take on Les Aigles Bleues with puck drop set for 7:00pm. Mount Allison (3-18-3-1) have concluded their home schedule and play their next game against St. Thomas, also on Friday night, against 7 p.m.
