Panthers open New Year with 3-2 win over Moncton
The University of Prince Edward Island Panthers (5-10-0-2=12pts, 7th position) were not idle and managed to control the attack of the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues (9-8-0-2=20pts, 5th position) to win 3-2 on Saturday afternoon in an Atlantic University Sport women's hockey game at the J.-Louis-Lévesque Arena on the Moncton campus in front of more than 200 spectators.
MONCTON, NB—The University of Prince Edward Island Panthers (5-10-0-2=12pts, 7th position) were not idle and managed to control the attack of the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues (9-8-0-2=20pts, 5th position) to win 3-2 on Saturday afternoon in an Atlantic University Sport women's hockey game at the J.-Louis-Lévesque Arena on the Moncton campus in front of more than 200 spectators.
McKinley Nelson's third-period goal, her second of the game, was the winner for the visitors. Her first gave her team a 2-1 lead in the second period and Avery Penner scored in the first period. Shani Rossignol (Erica Plourde, Émilie Lalancette) in the second and Maritza Labrie (Valérie Haché, Rossignol) on the power play in the third provided the Aigles Bleues offence. The first star of the game, goaltender Sarah Forsythe, faced 37 shots for the win and Audrey Berthiaume, 34 in the loss. Both teams scored once on 4 power plays each.
The Aigles Bleues (19 games played) have lost their last five games and the Panthers (17 games played) ended a losing streak.
Marc-André Côté's squad couldn't take advantage of the week, having lost both of its games against lower-ranked teams. The game was interesting for the spectators with several plays from one end of the ice to the other.
The Aigles Bleues will host the University of New Brunswick Reds (13-3-0-0=26pts, 2nd position) on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the J.-Louis-Lévesque Arena. UPEI will host Dalhousie Tigers Sunday at 3p.m.
