SACKVILLE, NB—A chilly fall night in Sackville brought the Mounties' men's soccer team onto the pitch at Alumni Field for their final home match of the season against the UPEI Panthers.
UPEI were thought to have been awarded a penalty when Salem Farag (Tripoli, Libya) went down in the box, however the referee saw nothing there and awarded a goal kick. Mount Allison's attack was limited by the UPEI defense as the score remained nil-nil at the half.
It was the home side that struck first in the 57th minute as a shot from Mounties captain Jack Bennett (Falmouth, NS) took a deflection off a Panther defender and past the keeper for a 1-0 lead. Mount Allison was not done there as Tevin Lewis (Nassau, Bahamas) fired home to double the home lead. UPEI responded in the 84th minute as Max VanWiechen (Montague, PEI) found the back of the net, but that was as close as the visitors would get as the Mounties hung on for their first win of the season.
Mount Allison (1-8-2) conclude their season on the road at Saint Mary's on Saturday, October 21st with kick-off set for 3:15pm in Halifax. UPEI (1-7-3) finish their season at home, also on the 21st, with 5:15 the kick-off time in Charlottetown.
