Panthers defeat Sea-Hawks in overtime
The UPEI Panthers were able to beat the Memorial Sea-Hawks in a tight game that was decided in overtime with a score of 84-77.
ST. JOHN'S, NL—The UPEI Panthers were able to beat the Memorial Sea-Hawks in a tight game that was decided in overtime with a score of 84-77.
A jump shot from Kamari Scott opened the scoring for the Panthers, however Boris Ristanovic had a reply for the Sea-Hawks with a dunk. The teams exchanged baskets, with UPEI able to keep the lead until midway through the quarter when a 3-pointer from River Drefers put Memorial ahead. The Sea-Hawks held onto the momentum for the remainder of the first and ended the quarter leading 22-16.
The Sea-Hawks came out strong offensively in the second quarter, highlighted by two layups from Emmanuel Ring. However, the Panthers were able to stay in the game, and a layup by Isiah Ankra brought them within 5 points of the lead midway through the quarter. Another layup for the Panthers by Elijah Miller tied the score up at 31 nearing the end of the second, and the lead went back-and-forth several times until the teams ended up tied at 37 to end the first half.
Isaiah Ankra led the Panthers at the half with 13 points. Kamari Scott had 10 and Dakelle Brooks got 6 points for the team.
On the Sea-Hawks side, Emmanuel Ring led all scorers at the half with 15 points. Boris Ristanovic put up 10 points and 5 rebounds and River Drefers got 6 points to end the half.
A free throw from Nicholas Tuff opened up the third quarter, but the Panthers had a reply with a layup from Dakelle Brooks to take over the lead. Halfway through the quarter the Panthers were able to pull ahead to take a 6-point lead, however a layup from Flynn Boardman-Raffet and two free throws helped to keep the game close. A jump shot followed by a layup from Emmanuel Ring allowed the Sea-Hawks to regain the lead and create a 10-0 run. A jump shot from Daren Clarke ended that run, and a layup from Sam Chisholm tied the score again at 51 in the final minute of play. Tight play continued, and the Sea-Hawks were able to keep a 54-53 lead heading into the final quarter.
The fourth quarter opened with a 7-0 run for the Panthers, including a 3-point jump shot from Sam Chisholm. A layup from Flynn Boardman-Raffet from Memorial ended that run, and the Sea-Hawks were able to go on their own 7-0 run to take back the lead. Back-and-forth play continued and the lead was passed back and forth several times, with UPEI able to pull ahead by 3 thanks to two good free throws from Elijah Miller nearing the end of the quarter. A three-pointer from Nicholas Tuff gave Memorial the lead in the final two minutes of play, however the Panthers had a reply with a 3-pointer from Elijah Miller. A last-minute dunk from Boris Ristanovic tied the score back up at 73, sending the game into overtime.
Another big dunk from Memorial's Boris Ristanovic opened the scoring in overtime. A layup from Panther Isiah Anrka tied the score back up, and another layup from Kamari Scott gave them the lead with 2 minutes remaining. Despite a determined effort from the Sea-Hawks, the UPEI Panthers were able to hold onto the lead and take the game 84-77.
The Subway Player of the game for the Panthers was Kamari Scott, with 22 points and 15 rebounds. Elijah Miller got 18 points while Isiah Ankra got 17.
Emmanuel Ring scored a game-high 25 points for the Sea-Hawks, along with 7 rebounds. Boris Ristanovic put up a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, and Flynn Boardman-Raffet had a solid performance with 14 points and 6 assists.
Both teams will play again tomorrow at 2:00pm NST to end their regular season play.
