Glenn Smiley
Soccer player Glenn Smiley came to the University of Prince Edward Island in the fall of 1983 and his impact was felt immediately.
Over the next four years, he would help lead his soccer team to three AUS Championships, as well as earn a number of individual honours. In his first year, Smiley was named an All-Conference midfielder, while helping the team to its first of three AUS crowns in soccer. In the CIS semifinals, UPEI met and lost to McGill, and Smiley earned his first CIS All-Canadian honours.
In the 1984–85 season, Smiley, along with 2002 UPEI Sport Hall of Fame inductee Alan Spink, led the Panthers to a second AUS title and a second CIS semifinal berth. Smiley again was named an AUS All-Conference midfielder and CIS All-Canadian.
UPEI captured its third straight Atlantic Championship in 1985–86. Smiley was named UPEI’s MVP and an AUS All-Conference player. UPEI lost another close 1–0 game to Concordia on MacAdam Field. It was the first time that snow had to be cleared from the field for a playoff University soccer game.
The 1986–87 season saw Smiley receive his fourth straight AUS All-Conference Award, but the Panthers were unable to capture a fourth title.
Smiley’s time on the soccer field at UPEI helped bring the Panthers to a new level in soccer. During his years here, the team set the groundwork for the strong soccer tradition that is now so much a part of men’s soccer at UPEI.
Smiley graduated from UPEI with a Business degree and is employed by the RCMP. He lives in Stratford with his wife, Jacinta.
