The UPEI Women's Volleyball Team is in Halifax this weekend, to play in the Halifax Open tournament at the Canada Games Centre. The tournament is normally held mid-February, and Coach Phil O'Neill said he was pleased that even with the date switch and final exams looming, that the Panthers are ready to play.
"The team has worked really hard this year, especially late in the season. The commitment and effort, particularly from the new players, has been tremendous. We're unsure what to expect in Halifax, as our division includes the top Maritime senior women's teams, made up of former AUS and ACAA players. Having said that, if the team plays as hard as they've been practicing, we should be fine," said O'Neill. "Hillary Isleifson, from Saskatchewan, has added height and depth to the Panthers this year, and continues to impress us. She's a very strong player, with NCAA experience and a lot of poise, particularly out of the back court."
"Alessandra Corno, from Modena, Italy, was a Panther walk-on back in September, and earned the starting off-side hitter position. She's one of three six footers on the team, with elite volleyball skills developed in Europe, and she hits everything hard." added O'Neill.
The forty team tournament begins Saturday, with the cross-overs and playoffs scheduled for Sunday.
