The UNB V-Reds come to town this weekend for two big tilts, game time is 8:00pm both Friday and Saturday. The Reds are currently tied in first place of the AUS, with 28 points. This team is playing very well right now, led by their star Javon Masters. Coach Baker has done another great job with his team. Eleven of their players play at least twelve minutes per game, making it difficult to scout them individually. We will need to play our best basketball of the season from here on out. We have seven league games remaining, only three of which are at home, so we know we need points from these games.
From now until late spring or early summer, is a big time for recruiting. We have talked to a number of potential Panthers from throughout the Maritimes and Canada, and a number of other countries around the world. As you know, we are very excited to have already announced that 6'6 Vernelle Johnson, a member of Nova Scotia's Provincial Team programs and Halifax Grammar School, will be joining us this fall! Without saying too much more because we must wait until their official acceptance into UPEI has been finalized, we will soon be announcing two others that we are very happy about that have now committed to our program! Stay tuned for these big announcements, and more, to come over the next few weeks or so!
Tyler Scott is closing in on some big time individual numbers! He is 55 points away from moving into the all-time Top 10 in AUS scoring (former Panther Curtis Robinson sits at #1), and seven made three pointers away from entering the Top 5 all-time in that category of the AUS! He has been an outstanding player for us here at UPEI, and more importantly, a great young man!
I am very proud of my team right now. We all know that we have not had the kind of season that we had hoped for. It is always easy to point fingers… this guy should do this, that guy shoots too much, he doesn't rebound, they don't defend, Coach should play this guy more, etc. After finishing in the top three of the AUS over the five previous regular seasons and sporting the best overall record (64-36) over that span, and losing by two in the Championship game last year, believe me when I say that my players and coaches are feeling this deeply. We are a very positive and close knit group in this program! We believe that there is only one way to face adversity, and that is "HEAD ON" and "TOGETHER"! Our guys have continued to work very hard in practice, and there is not one person within our team that does not believe that we are going to make a run!
I really appreciate all of the positive emails, texts, phone calls, and comments that I have received from some of our great fans and supporters, especially over these past couple of weeks! Thank-you all… and remember, all good days ahead are coming for the Panthers!
GO PANTHERS GO!
