Vernon Pahl
One of UPEI's football greats, Vernon Pahl was a staple on the offensive line. The powerful guard used his strength to protect the quarterback against oncoming defenders and cleared holes for his running back to sprint through. In his sophomore season in 1977, Pahl solidified himself as a leader on the O-line and was named to the "Dream Team" -- Atlantic University Football All-Conference Team -- for the first time. The Montreal native also earned UPEI's first Harvey's Sporting Goods Lineman of the Year Award. In 1978, he helped the Panthers capture their only winning season with a record of 4-3. In his final season, Pahl moved to the defensive line where he wreaked havoc on opposing offenses and created turnovers with his forceful hits. Later that year, he was unanimously selected as a conference all-star, but this time as a defender. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers were attracted by Pahl's versatile skill set and selected him in the third round of the 1980 CFL draft. He would go on to win two Grey Cups (1984 and 19988).
