Mike Kelly
They say nice guys finish last. But this nominee proves that this is not true.
The late Mike Kelly, known throughout the Maritimes as the gentleman’s hockey player, proved that talent and sportsmanship are a winning combination.
Kelly came to St. Dunstan’s University from Morell High School, and joined the Saints after Christmas in the 1963–64 season. The promising rookie scored four goals and had three assists in eight games, helping the Saints to a second-place finish in the Maritime Intercollegiate League.
The following year, he was one of the team’s leading scorers, and helped the Saints to a Maritime Intercollegiate Championship and a trip to the nationals, where they eventually lost in the final to Manitoba.
As a senior, Kelly led his team and the Maritime League as top scorer with 35 points. He was also team captain and was selected as the team’s Most Valuable Player.
For his hockey talent and his outstanding approach to the game, this nice guy will finish first tonight as we induct the late Mike Kelly into the UPEI Sport Hall of Fame.
