UPEI win second shootout in a row, sweep weekend

By Justin Arenburg

For the second straight night the UPEI women's hockey team won in a shootout, this time against the Dalhousie Tigers.

After a scoreless 20 minutes, the scoring opened in the second period when fourth-year forward Taylor Gillis scored at the 7:46 mark. Gillis, who's on a scoring tear right now, deposited her third goal in her last two games bringing her season total to nine goals and six assists.

The Tigers came right back though with a goal of their own from Abby Wamboldt at the 9:42 mark of the second period.

A lot of close chances from both teams would take place for the next period and a half including overtime as well, but no goals were to be found.

Tigers' netminder and Subway Player of the Game Grace Beer was the reason why the team earned a point on the night, as she turned aside 47 shots.

Beer said she knew coming into tonight's matchup that the Panthers could shoot well, and she needed to help her team out.

"I had to stand my ground and play really aggressive because a lot of them can shoot really well."

In the end though, Sarah Forsythe outdueled Beer in the shootout, as she denied five out of the six shots she faced.

The Panthers, who completed the weekend sweep and improved to 10-6-1 on the season, will now go on the road starting next Friday against the Saint Mary's Huskies, while the Dalhousie Tigers fall to 8-7-1-3 and return home next Friday to play St. FX.
