Panthers' comeback falls short in 3-2 loss to Moncton
The Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues (4-10-0) held on late in the third period Saturday afternoon to score a 3-2 victory over the University of Prince Edward Island Panthers (7-6-1) in an Atlantic University Sport women's hockey game at the J.-Louis-Lévesque Arena.
MONCTON, NB—The Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues (4-10-0) held on late in the third period Saturday afternoon to score a 3-2 victory over the University of Prince Edward Island Panthers (7-6-1) in an Atlantic University Sport women's hockey game at the J.-Louis-Lévesque Arena.
This is the first time this season that the Blue and Gold won two in a row and the first win against the Panthers in 3 games. The home team opened the scoring in the first period at 4:27, on the power play thanks to a goal from captain Isadora Quirion (Shani Rossignol, Catherine Longchamps). At the beginning of the second Alexia Desforges (Longchamps, Erica Plourde) with her first brought the count to 2-0 at 5:55. In the third period, Alexia Desforges (Plourde, Lianne Desforges) stood out once again by scoring her second of the game at 10:23.
The Panthers often attacked in the third with two goals scored in four minutes late in the period. Their counterattack paid off with the goals by Sophie Bujold (unassisted) at 14:01 and Orianna MacNeil (Alyssa Nolan, Kelly Clements) at 18:35 with their goalie on the bench. The Panthers continued their assault, but goalie Annick Boudreau and the defense held on. Sara Forsythe saw 22 pucks in the loss and Boudreau saw 31 for the win. Moncton scored once on two power plays and the Panthers were 0-for-6.
The Aigles Bleues next game is Wednesday at 7 p.m. against the St Thomas University Tommies at home. The Panthers will play in Fredericton on Wednesday against the University of New Brunswick Reds.
