After MacDonald's playing career ended in 2018 as a member of the Summerside Western Capitals, he pursued coaching and spent the last three seasons as an assistant coach for the Grand Falls Rapids, another Maritime Junior Hockey League team.

"My time in Grand Falls was huge for me. They took a shot and gave me an opportunity to develop under some great coaches and trusted me to take on more responsibility," said the 25-year-old. "Working with the organization prepared me for this role with UPEI."
