Tracy MacEachern
When Tracy MacEachern arrived at UPEI from Chatham, NB, in 1983, she was looking forward to studying and playing field hockey and basketball. She did all that and much more over the next five years as she completed a BEd and a BA, distinguished herself as an All-Conference Player in two sports, and was named UPEI’s Outstanding Athlete.
In her freshman year, MacEachern began her field hockey career as a goalkeeper. She earned Rookie of the Year honours, and was named an AUS All-Star. However, her basketball year was one of hard work and learning with coach Dave “Hermie” MacNeill. In 1984–85, Tracy repeated as a field hockey AUS All-Conference winner, and was named the team’s MVPO. Her basketball skills began to develop and she was named UPEI’s Most Improved Player.
The UPEI MVP and AUS All-Conference field hockey awards were repeated in 1985–86, as was UPEI’s Most Improved Player in basketball. She capped off her year by winning the Sport PEI All-Round Female Athlete award.
In her fourth year, everything came together for Tracy as she dominated the sports scene. She was MVP in UPEI’s field hockey and basketball, was voted MVP of the AUS basketball tournament, and named an All-Conference Player in field hockey and basketball. Her basketball team also won the AUS crown. Her solid performance in both sports led to her being named UPEI’s Outstanding Female Athlete and Sport PEI’s All-Round Female Athlete for the second time.
In her fifth year, she picked up her fifth straight field hockey and second basketball All-Conference award. She also helped her basketball team capture its second straight AUS title. Her UPEI field hockey MVP award and Most Dedicated Player in basketball led to her second UPEI Outstanding Athlete Award. Today she is Head Coach of the UPEI Women’s Basketball Team. She is also Vice-Principal at Sherwood Elementary School. Tracy and her husband, Paul Ellsworth, live in Charlottetown with their two children.
