Glen Miller
Glen Miller came to UPEI in the fall of 1994 and began one of the most star studded careers as a UPEI sweeper with the soccer Panthers. He won the outstanding offensive award as a rookie and from there he made history by being named a four time AUAA All Conference All Star and a four time All Canadian award winner. In his final year with the squad, Miller won every possible individual award, capping off his remarkable career with the biggest and best at the national level.
Miller was a member of the Sherwood Breakers senior men's team that won both the Island league and cup. But it was when the AUAA season started that the talents of this gifted Island soccer player began to emerge in full force.
He had been an integral part of the Panther machine for a number of seasons and this year, he and his teammates would enjoy that long-awaited taste of victory.
Being voted most valuable player of the AUAA men's soccer conference was a fitting tribute to his performance and to his contribution to the team's success. For the fourth time he became an all-Canadian and there was still more to come for this fifth-year Panther sweeper.
At the CIAU nationals in Montreal, Miller received the highest honour attainable as he was named winner of the Joe Johnstone Memorial Award, emblematic of the most valuable player in the CIAU -- the best university soccer player in the country.
One of the nicest gestures bestowed upon a UPEI athlete occurred in 1998 when the university retired Glen Miller's soccer sweater. Miller has been the consummate team player with the program and fittingly capped an illustrious five-year intercollegiate career last month with an AUAA championship. The nephew of the late, great Charlie Ryan, Miller has always put the team ahead of himself, deflecting individual praise and awards for the cause of the entire team. Retiring his No. 13 is a nice way to honour Mr. Soccer at the university.
