Dr. Brian Chandler
During his years at Prince of Wales College, Brian Chandler participated in a multitude of sports and numerous activities on campus. From 1950 to 1952, he played senior hockey and senior football (rugby). In his second year in football he was a captain to whom players looked for leadership. The next year he added juvenile hockey; and, in his final year at PWC, he played senior basketball, becoming City of Charlottetown Champions. He also competed in track and field in the fall. When Brian graduated in 1954, he was on the Student Council, President of the Amateur Athletic Association (AAA), and a member of the choral group. After PWC, he went on to Mount Allison University where he played varsity football and hockey. He received a Silver “A” award from Mount A. in 1956.
He attended Dalhousie Medical School from 1956 to 1961 and played varsity football there from 1956 to 1960. There, too, he took an active role in university life, including President of the Athletic Council and member of the Joint Student-Faculty Committee on Athletics. He received a Gold “D” award in 1960. After further training in the field of Cardiology, he returned to Halifax in 1967 and became Director of Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories, Director of the Coronary Care Unit, and Chief of Cardiology Service. Dr. Chandler received numerous awards during his long and distinguished career, including Honorary LLD from UPEI in 1996. He retired in 1999 and continued to enjoy his love of golf and harness racing, both in Halifax and on Prince Edward Island. Dr. Chandler passed away on November 7, 2004, after a short but intense battle with cancer.
