Sea-Hawks explode in second half for huge victory over Panthers
The Memorial Sea-Hawks (4-5-2) put together one of their more complete games of the season in a 4-0 defeat of the UPEI Panthers (1-7-2).
ST. JOHN'S, NFLD—The Memorial Sea-Hawks (4-5-2) put together one of their more complete games of the season in a 4-0 defeat of the UPEI Panthers (1-7-2).
The Sea-Hawks and Panthers played a more conservative first half of soccer, with both team's defensive acumen's on full display. Neither team was able to break through for a goal in the first half, with both sides heading into the half at a scoreless deadlock. The Sea-Hawks held the lead on the shot count, firing 4 shots on target to the Panthers 3.
The game would open up a significant amount in the second half with both team's taking chances on the offensive end to try and take the lead. The home team was able to break the scoreless game open with a goal by midfielder Sarah Jones in the 48th minute, opening up the floodgates for the Sea-Hawks. Shortly after, the Sea-Hawks would add an insurance marker thanks to a stunning individual effort by forward Claire Langille in the 61st minute, a few minutes later Isabella Hoddinott would convert a chance in the box to extend their lead to 3. With only a few minutes left, Sea-Hawks goalkeeper Sydney Walsh would fire an outstanding goal kick to Claire Kean for the final goal of the game in the 87th minute to complete a tremendous performance for the home team.
The Sea-Hawks would finish ahead on the shot count by a total of 11-4, goalkeeper Sydney Walsh would stop all 4 shots directed her way for the shutout, while Panthers goalkeeper Veronica Kozak did all she could, stopping 7 of 11 shots on target.
With their win today, the Sea-Hawks have vaulted themselves firmly into the 6th and final playoff spot, 4 points clear of 7th place UNB.
