Panthers break school records at AUS Championships
Panthers bring solid effort at AUS Championships.
The UPEI Varsity Swim Team hosted the AUS Championships this past weekend at the Bell Aliant Centre. The Varsity Panthers came up big with a very solid team performance throughout the three days of racing.
Matthew Smith a second year swimmer earned UPEI it's first medal in five years by swimming to a Bronze and breaking new UPEI School Record in the Men's 200 Free. Smith didn't stop there, he also swam to 4th place finish in the 100 Back and 5th in the 200 Back and 8th in the 400 Free.
Also on the men's side freshman Pieter Vanleeuwen, who finished 4th in the Men's 1500 and also breaking a UPEI School Record. Vanleeuwen also finished 5th in the 400 Free (also a new UPEI Record).
Karim El-Husseiny added to the Men's point total by finishing 7th in the Men's 50 Fly and 11 in the 50 Breaststroke breaking a new UPEI School Record. Jakob Goettke, finished 8th in the Men's 50 Back. These Four men's also swam to new UPEI School Records in the 400 Free Relay and 400 Medley finishing 5th and 6th respectively.
On the Lady Panthers side, senior swimmer Stephany Hatayama Humphreys finished 6th in the 50 Free, 8th in the 50 Fly, and 9th in the 100 Free and 100 Fly.
Rebekah Nitschmann a fourth year swimmer, had a record breaking weekend by setting new UPEI School Records, including an 8th place finish in the Womens 400 Free and 11th in the 200 Free. Nitschmann also added to the teams totals with an 8th place in the Women's 800 Free and just missing the School record by 3/10's of a second.
Callie McAulay finished 10th in the 100 Breaststroke and 11th in the 50m Breast. Kelsey Bolivar was 10th in the 200 Back, 12th in the 100 Back and 14th in the 50 Back and 100 Fly. The Panthers combined for 6th place finishes in the 400 Free Relay and 400 Medley Relays.
