Panthers go on 19-4 run to close out Capers
Sydney, NS - In a match that went down to the final minutes of the fourth quarter, the Cape Breton University Capers (0-10) fell short to the University of Prince Edward Island Panthers (3-7) with a final score of 90-81, Friday evening in Atlantic University Sport Basketball action at the Sullivan Field House.
The game started off with high emotion, which continued on throughout the entire night. Back-to-back three pointers by Milorad Sedlarevic (Jesenice, Slovenia) sparked the visiting Panthers and Dut Dut (Ottawa, ON) hit a shot from the free-throw line as the first quarter expired to give UPEI a 21-19 lead after the first quarter of action.
The high paced back and forth action carried into the second quarter. DaShawn LaLor-Crooks (Toronto, ON) sunk a lay-up in transition to put the Capers up 35-28 but Amin Suleman (Toronto, ON) drilled a three pointer to give the Panthers a two-point lead heading into the half.
A pair of Jake Kendrick's free throws (Wolfville, NS) put the Panthers up by 10 points in the third but the Capers managed to cut the deficit to only two heading into the final quarter.
The game remained close all throughout the fourth as both teams exchanged leads multiple times, but when the game was tied at 77 with under 3 minutes to go, UPEI's Tyler Scott (Halifax, NS) scored 10 consecutive points, including back-to-back threes, to give the Panthers the lead for good.
For the Panthers, Tyler Scott scored a game-high 26 points, including 16 in the fourth quarter. Loranzo Parker (New Minas, NS) came off the bench and contributed 15 points on 5/7 shooting.
Leading the way for the Capers was Kenny Jean-Louis (Montreal,QC) with 23 points and added 13 rebounds. Shacier Locke (Mississauga, ON) added 16 points with 12 rebounds.
The Panthers return to the court Jan. 14th, as they face the X-men in Antigonish.
