Dr. Vincent Grant
Back in 1937, a young man by the name of Vincent Grant arrived at Prince of Wales College from Montague.
He had never played rugby, but he picked up the game quickly and scored the winning try that first season against St. Dunstan’s Universty, PWC’s arch rivals.
It was an omen of things to come, and an indication of his remarkable and versatile athletic talent.
In his second season, he was an outstanding player in the PWC’s victory over St. Dunstan’s in the 1938 Wellner Cup for Island intercollegiate hockey supremacy.
Grant took the next year off to play junior hockey for the Charlottetown Abbies, and then moved out the road to St. Dunstan’s to wear the red-and-white.
On the rugby field, he was known for his speed and outstanding defense. In hockey, he played on the famed Steele, Coyle, and Grant line that led the Saints team to a New Brunswick-PEI Intercollegiate Championship. And he was named the Best All-Round Athlete in track and field, setting records in the 220 and 440.
