Peter Gordon
Peter Gordon from Whitby, Ontario, arrived on the UPEI campus in the fall of 1986 and immediately made his presence known on the hardwood at the Alumni Gym.
He checked in as a fairly lightweight player in a six-foot-three-inch frame. But he had leaping and shooting abilities that would put him head and shoulders above the rest, and turn him into a heavyweight around the league.
In his first season, he earned All-conference and AUAA Rookie of the Year honours.
It was an omen of things to come.
Peter formed the nucleus of a Panther squad that would dominate the AUAA basketball in the late 1980s.
He led UPEI to two AUAA championships in 1987–88 and 1988–89, and, along the way, he picked up virtually every honour there was: four straight AUAA First Team All-Star selections, CIAU All-Canadian Honourable Mention, and three CIAU All-Canadian selections.
He also consistently finished in the top three Conference scoring, and was UPEI’s Outstanding Male Athlete of the Year three times.
Over five years at UPEI, he scored 1,639 points in league play—19.8 points per game. He also scored 407 points on foul shots and averaged 6.1 rebounds per game.
Peter is now a teacher in Whitby, Ontario, and coaches at nearby Durham College, instilling in the young players his determination, work ethic, and love of the game that were so evident during his years at UPEI.
For all these qualities, for the many unforgettable moments he gave to basketball fans around the Maritimes, and for his immense talent, we are pleased to induct Peter Gordon into the UPEI Sports Hall of Fame.
