Mac Beck
Most people are pleased to be able to compete in one sport at the collegiate level.
In the early 1940s, Mac Beck went far beyond that at Prince of Wales College (PWC), where he not only competed in four sports, he received athletic letters in all four of them.
Malcolm Nestor Beck was born in 1924 and completed his early school years in Montague. In 1941 he arrived at PWC to start grade 12, and going on to complete his first two years of College there as well.
During those three years, he became well-known for his athletic prowess, as he played rugby, hockey, basketball, and track and field. He also played hockey with the Junior Royals, played intramural volleyball, and received the Gordon DeBlois Memorial Prize for the student who best combined athletics and academics.
His academic goals would take him away from PWC, and eventually to Mount Allison, McGill, Dalhousie, and the Medical College of Virginia. However, he continued the athletic pursuits that he began as a Welshman, playing rugby at Mount A. and McGill, and hockey at Mount A. and Dalhousie.
A sportsman, doctor, family man, well-known Islander, and proud Prince of Wales Welshman, it is now my honour to induct Dr. Mac Beck into the UPEI Sports Hall of Fame.
