Dave Shellington
UPEI Hockey Panther Dave Shellington is fourth overall for Men’s Hockey All-Time Scoring Leader in the Atlantic University Conference (AUS). He won UPEI Rookie of the Year in 1985–86, and was the team’s leading scorer in 1986–87 and 1987–88, when the Panthers were AUAA Champs. In 1987–88, Dave received his first―but not last― AUAA All-Star. In 1988–89, he was again named AUAA All-Star, as well as team MVP, Most Dedicated Player, and was recipient of the J. T. Mickey Place Award. In his final season, Dave had 18 goals and 24 assists for a total of 42 points in 21 games, with only 6 minutes in penalties. He was again named the team’s Most Dedicated Player, AUAA All-Star, and CIAU All-Canadian.
Dave shattered scoring records at UPEI, scoring many big game winners, and was true leader, captaining his team on and off the ice. In addition to hockey and studies, Dave and the Panthers were very involved in making sure they gave something back to the community. In 1989, when a program for minor hockey teams and their volunteer coaches was developed, Shellington and teammates helped at practice sites by talking with players and coaches, conducting practices, and supplying practice drills. The Panthers were also involved with the Charlottetown Boys and Girls Club.
Dave and his wife, Cathy, live in Charlottetown. He teaches at Stonepark Intermediate.
